Seminars

Managing Risks, Changes and Claims for Profit
Thursday, October 23 — with Construction Attorney Robert Lennenberg

Approximately 20 contractors attended this seminar, held at FCAI's Educational Center in Aurora. Roger Lennenberg (pictured at the left) discussed how to preserve your profit and margins through simple, cost-effective techniques. This seminar was developed by the Business Practices Advisory Committee of national FCA.

Those in attendance found it to be a quality seminar:
"The speaker was knowledgeable and very informative."
"It was good information ...I wish I would have brought more of my staff."

One area that was stressed was the importance of recognizing risk and learning how to evaluate the impact of risk on profit — the key to minimizing project loss, understanding contracts and killer terms. Effectively developing the skills to manage risk is the foundation of a successful, profitable project.

Other topics covered were:
• elements of claims & unpaid change orders
• scheduling issues faced by contractors
• how to be an effective negotiator & resolve disagreements without conflict
• project management
• skills & techniques necessary for managing changes
• various aspects of documentation

Lennenberg posed a management problem for the group to consider in terms of risk, documentation and bidding. He went on to offer a 'contract' problem and then, an actual 'job' problem for participants to solve.
